would it be okay to put a timer on the furnace to keep it from running all night to make domestic hot water?

Or you can buy an electric water heater and turn off the oil burner all summer

What makes the hot water? Tankless coil, indirect, tankless with a booster? How many times does the furnace (boiler) come on during the night?
Too much idle draft through the boiler? What make and model boiler?

Timer is cheaper than a new electric water heater and installation.  Mad Dog 🐕

it is an indirect tank, im not worried about the water heater so much as im worried about the need for the furnace to stay at temp all night for what i can see is no apparent reason, does that make sense?

It should be wired on a priority control.  Once the tank is satisfied, the boiler should NOT be kicking on all night unless someone is using hot water. What make of Indirect?  How Old?  All an indirect is, is a Well insulated Thermos Bottle.  Pics please   mad Dog 🐕

The boiler should be set to cold start. kind of defeats most of the benefit of the indirect if you set it to warm start.

@lono has an older, oil fired boiler that had a tankless coil, the coil was not maintained so there was insufficient hot water. Someone said that an Indirect would produce unlimited hot water so @lono purchased an indirect.

The installer did a great job installing the indirect but did not know that the boiler that maintained temperature for the tankless coil should be rewired or re-controlled to stop maintaining boiler temperature.

Now the boiler cycles on the low limit temperature every 3 to 4 hours over night to maintain temperature.

The best advice is to forget the timer idea and get the proper control or rewire the existing control for Cold Start.

Picture of the boiler with the control cover off will let us know if I'm correct.

The lowest cost option would be to rewire the control. If the Indirect is any good, the idle tank will take over 16 hours to loose enough temperature to trigger a call for heat. So the last hot water usage before bed will set the tank to a temperature that will keep the oil burner off for the entire night. I believe this is the goal for @lono

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

Thrifty Yankees turn off the E-Switch (up or downstairs) and switch it back on for a DWH demand.
You'll also find out if you have tight boiler.
