@ChrisJ, the point was, whether due to a lack of skilled trades peple, or a lack of money, homeowners are faced with learning how to make repairs themselves or allow their homes to fall into disrepair.  

The internet and big box stores combined can get anyone half way to a resolution.    

@Mad Dog_2,  agreed, customer service is non existent.   Have you heard the one where a guy walks in looking for a flat ****?

I'm fairly certain that's always been.
No one in my family ever hired anyone to do anything. Partially due to money. Partially due to how people were brought up.

Parts etc were bought from local hardware stores instead of larger chains. If you needed help you got it from books, word of mouth or asking at the local places. People at small hardware stores were usually far more helpful than at the larger places.

My dad absolutely hated Homer when it came out, and I think still does. He preferred lumber yards etc.


Doing your own work is far from a new thing....... My house was built by the people that lived in it, almost entirely. There was a time when most people were almost completely self sufficient. Either that, or you didn't live long.
