    had a new heat pump installed last year and I would like to update the thermostat. Is it a straight forward swap? Thanks

    Best to get the installing contractor to set it up. If they  do something wrong warranty will cover it.

    That is a lovely old thermostat, and absolutely bulletproof. Nothing new you install will work as well or as reliably...
