Radiator in bedroom won't shut off

Hi everyone. I have a radiator in my bedroom and we've not been able to get it to shut off by tightening the valve. It's shut all the way, but the heat still comes through.

Steam? Many steam valves don't actually shut off all the way. If this is one pipe steam, that valve should only be used for maintenance. In any event, it isn't uncommon for old valves -- steam or hot water -- to not shut off all the way. They can be maintained; there is a washer at the bottom of the operating shaft.Br. Jamie, osb

@Jamie Hall Thanks. The thermostat is set at 72°F and the other occupants refuse to reduce it since they will not get any heat downstairs. Is there anything I can do to reduce the heat from it? Like making a wooden box to enclose it?0

If it's 1 pipe steam, you can remove the vent and replace it with a thermostatic vent. If you want it "off' you can remove the vent and replace it with a 1/8" brass plug.Trying to squeeze the best out of a Weil-McLain JB-5 running a 1912 1 pipe system.0

A box is a great idea. If you want a little heat from time to time, you can add a register with an adjustable Louver That can be opened and closed or partially opened.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

Put a thick blanket over it.1

Any blanket will do. Fire retardant isn’t necessary as the radiator doesn’t get nearly hot enough to combust anything.1
