Heating an Unfinished Basement

Hubby has a workshop in our basement (well lit, with a bit of drywall). He's getting older and can't deal with how cold it gets so we're looking for the best and most economical solution. Our gas furnace is in the basement and there are lots of electrical outlets. We had an HVAC person give us an estimate of $ to add whatever is necessary to tap into the furnace - yikes. It's only 1000' Sq. and it keeps itself cool in the summer so we don't need air conditioning, just a way to bring the temp up to 68 degrees. Is there a portable or space heater that would work well? Thanks so much for your help.....

And more to the point, what type of heating system is this? A furnace is mentioned, which should mean hot air - but that's not a given, and it does make a difference...Br. Jamie, osb

@tallbarb
Google this or something similar
Williams 22H3822
Williams Direct-Vent - 22K BTU - Gas Direct-Vent Wall Furnace - NG - 67% AFUE - Up to 8,000 Ft Altitude
This would be the way to go since you already have gas
Cutting into the furnace ductwork and making another zone isn't a good choice. It won't heat the basement well0
