Gas Safety Shut Off Valve

Local restaurant is trying to install a walk in cooler and there is a 3" ITT Safety Shutoff on the natural gas system. It looks to be a few decades old. Are these still relevant, and/or required? If required, has anyone seen these outside?

I don't specify- the shut off valve is in the way....;)0
-
Is it spring loaded and connected by cable to the hood fire suppression system?

Post a picture of this gas valve so we can understand the type of valve it is. As far as it being necessary, you made need to consult the building code officer in the city where this restaurant is located.0

That looks like your "Ansul" system. It is mandatory for fire suppression.0

Either Ansul type hood system or fire alarm panel would shut it in case of an alarm activation. Probably outside so it would shut off all gas in the building.0

I agree with @JUGHNE on either count but probably more on building gas shutoff. Every school building in the Pittsburgh Pa. public school system had one to shut off the gas entering the building.0

Just being electrical it cant be blocked. 3' clearance for service in most judications

Get in touch with your local fire department inspectors they can advise which way to go.

If you have a large boiler with a IRI gas train some of those have a solenoid valve. installed off a tee in the gas train for a vent.
The old "double block and bleed"0
