Happy holidays...

I have single pipe steam heat... I have closed one heater from getting steam... occasionally... the steam pipe going to this radiator start hammering so loudly, and also noticed during water hammering, there are small amount of water leaking..

1) Is there long term damages to the steam pipe with this occasional water hammering?
2) How is it that water getting in to the steam pipe for this radiator?
3) Is it possible water from return line is being pushed in to the steam pipe? if so what might be the possible reasons for water to get in the steam pipe?

Thank you!

If it hammers since you closed the shut off valve ......then open it.

Likely the shut off valve is old and will not shut tight so some steam is getting to the radiator and water can't get out.

Letting it hammer may cause leaks

And if you really don't want the heat, in most cases simply turning the vent upside down will stop the heat.

Hammer will eventually damage fittings and cause leaks.

I’ve also seen water hammer cause pitting in pipe nipples and leaks start.
