The significance of the fire

"The Irish made fires that never went out. Did you know that? The fire in the hearth was for cooking and for warmth, and it smoldered for hundreds of years in some cases. Think of it. Generations tended that endless fire."

Love this story. I myself immigrated from Ireland to California back in 1987 when I was 12 years old. I do like to have a turf fire when I visit my hometown of Easkey Co. Sligo. Nothing beats it. The smell , good conversation and a pint of Guinness.

Wow Dan, another fine story! I've been reading them to my wife who loves great writing too. We enjoyed the Iceland story last night and today the Ireland story. (Just noticed theres only a 1 letter difference.🙂)We ditched the electronic sanashie in 1997, that was a good move!
    Thanks again

That's sweet. My 7 year old hasn't gotten to the stickers yet, but it's only 12:30. ;)

Happy St Patrick's day to you all.
It's a very quiet one this year due to the current events.

Don't forget that tomorrow is Rudolf DIesel's birthday. More snakes are killed by Diesel-powered trucks each year than St. Patrick ever took out of Ireland. So celebrate Rudolf Diesel's birthday.

Have a photo of a peat fire at Shannon Airport restaurant, 2010. A beauty. How might I post it here?

Fascinating story. A part of my Irish ancestry that I never knew. Interesting that the dried black turf would burn. I want to do more research on this.
