THE most important thing you need to pay attention to is the fact that there is Mercury involved. If you spill it, recovery will be at your expense, and it gets VERY expensive. And as others have noted, the mercury charge could have gotten blown up into the system, possibly in the expansion tank in the attic, or in radiators.
You'd be wise to make certain you have an insurance floater for hazardous materials. If not, get one. It's much cheaper than paying for recovery out of pocket.
Proceed with extreme caution, and if you spill some, DO NOT USE a vacuum to pick it up (it vaporizes into the air and becomes even more deadly). Scrape it together using business cards or playing cards, then recycle appropriately.

Thanks Mark
I have no intention of disturbing it or removing it from my system. The system continues to work extremely well especially since I converted the boiler from oil to natural gas nearly 40 years ago.
My house is huge and was built in 1909. It has 10 ft ceilings and is 50 x 50 with three stories.
The original system was coal as evidenced by the remnants left from the bin and appears to have been converted to oil in the late 50s or early 60s.-1 -
Sorry, I assumed you were a contractor...
