You're not using the channel locks backwards by any chance? Basically you need to be pushing on the back so that the force is applied to clamp down harder on whatever you're gripping.0

I agree with @KC_Jones , I have a 12" Williamson open end that does a nice job and if it's an old vent I'll put a 30" helper on the handle. I find channel locks do more damage than good on something like that.

Do not put any pipe dope or tape on the body threads.
The body seals to spud because of matched tapers and does not need any extra sealing.
