    You're not using the channel locks backwards by any chance? Basically you need to be pushing on the back so that the force is applied to clamp down harder on whatever you're gripping.

    I agree with @KC_Jones , I have a 12" Williamson open end that does a nice job and if it's an old vent I'll put a 30" helper on the handle. I find channel locks do more damage than good on something like that.

    Hello, I like old tools. Here is a photo of a Hoe wrench patented in 1922. The jaws are narrow and fit in places others don't. Also you don't have to grab the pipe straight on. It might be a good tool for this job. I find tools like this on Ebay.
