Any good ways to get enough solder out of a female fitting to make it slip over the pie when remaking a joint? I've tried heating it and tapping on something which sort of works but usually ends up with a bead at the edge that you have to file off.

Hi, For bigger fittings, I use a dry rag while the solder is still molten. I’m not good enough to use a bare finger :p

Yuk, 1/2”. Are you trying to clean it to the point where it will slip on cold? If you insist, that’s gonna be a pain. I would just hold it with channel locks, heat it, and waste a flux brush (they are cheap), clean it up. But in reality I would not even do that. Just heat it, stick it on and solder it

but I find it noteworthy how much time some people put into cleaning fittings and pipe. If you have lotta time, then I guess that’s all good

the time it takes me to fix that one that didn't wet that is in some weird corner where I preassembled some stuff i couldn't reach because i didn't clean it is saved in time cleaning it. i used a brush in my drill press for the outside and a brush in a driver for the inside. i used to just kinda clean and only flux one surface figuring it would flow but after a few bad joints I found tearing things apart, i clean and flux everything now.

I'm not sure if it was mentioned but after cleaning the copper with your choice of sand paper, Emory' scotch Brite etc, it's best to give it a good wipe with a clean rag to get the powder off of it.
