That's nuts. I think you're a L.I. guy Dan. There's a supplier in Medford, Hasko Utilities. Not to the extent of those old 12" fittings, but Dave the owner has some of the most obscure parts. If you bring in something weird, if he doesn't have it, he can usually make something work for you to use. I've never been in the warehouse, but I'm sure its a treasure trove. And he's a great guy to boot.

Great story, Dan. i can't imagine what it would have been like if he didn't get that old vent back on that pipe in time.

Today you just put a couple of bigmouth vents up there

Did we ever find out who made that football-sized vent?

With my luck the 3/4 would have twisted off and then the steam would come up! :o

Do you need a vent at the top of an overhead distribution steam system? Why not a menorah in boiler room? Or near bottom of each down riser?

We have to vent where the air is going, not where it's been.

Of course the air is going first up to the top, and then down the risers, so menorahs of basement located main vents would probably work, and be more convenient to monitor.
Careful attention would be needed to the main venting capacity on each down riser, so that the system would be balanced, and not favor one vertical stack of radiators over another.
Still the 3/4 inch vent at the top probably should have been more capacious now in the age of gas fired on-off boilers.--NBC
