X-pando used on pipe 10 years ago...

Anyone have any experience breaking loose pipe 6" to 1/4" that x-pando was used to seal the threads.. No teflon.
I'm not a fan of it, as it does very well at sealing pipemjoints, but I find the nipple will colapse before the joint breaks loose.
You think torching it might break it up, or is something like aerokroil needed? Btw, dont use aero kroil then torch without wiping the aero kroil up first, lol

The instructions on the can say to use a hammer on the joint before attempting to turn the pipe. That stuff is hard but somewhat brittle.

Hammer and try to tighten it a smudge...then it should back off with effort.

will it seal galled threads? Previous tech messed up threads for steam vent.

I'd try rtv before a hard setting dope. If the threads still tighten RTV or even wicking should work. If they won't hold you'll have to hope you can drill and tap oversize or maybe helicoil.

I'd go with RTV. At the pressures we run, it should seal, provided there is enough decent thread left to hold the thing in place mechanically.

    from xpando:

    1. Yes, it is possible, but it is more difficult than other materials. Straining the joint with a wrench will not usually work. The proper procedure is to put a strain on the pipe - with a wrench - while at the same time tapping the fitting all around. Striking the joint will break the expansion bond between the surface and the compound and allow the joint to be turned off.

Probably will seal an air vent with bad threads but I wouldn't use expando on anything likely needing replacement. Maybe drill and tap to a larger size and use a reducer or bushing if need be.

Or a nipple and a couple or a nipple and an ell and a straight vent.
