If that second schematic is the correct one, the plan to break both hots external to the heater will most likely cause problems. There's a fan switch that holds the fan on after the elements drop out to cool them off. If the fan drops out before the elements are cool enough, the high limit will trip.

Hence my initial suggestion to put the SSR or relay inside the appliance. Adding a control point to the appliance is not a bad thing.

If you use a SSR make sure it's on a good heatsink.

Here's what I've got so far.

Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.

    Looks about right to me.

Nice job on the enclosure too.

The heater should have a disconnect as well. Might as well incorporate that into the whole thing.

    The finished product.

Not bad for homemade in my opinion.
@MarkS does much nicer work but it's reliable and more importantly it's safe.

The funny part is it could in theory control two 11,000 watt heaters and it's only controlling a single 5000 watt one. :) I chose that contactor (40A DPST) because of price and dimensions.

Better make sure the ground screw is green, otherwise it won't meet code... ;) It looks better than a lot of the stuff I've seen.
