Ah yes... that setup preheats the incoming combustion air providing higher efficiency!

Must be the same guy that does all of the vertical steam headers.
Could be a EGR system to cool peak combustion temperatures and prevent knocking while running lean.Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.

Maybe he used to be an auto mechanic. The old carbureted cars had a heat riser pipe coming up from the exhaust manifold to preheat the incoming air for warm up. He was just trying to replicate that. What's the problem? lol0

Most TBI systems had this as well as well as heated intake manifolds. You only have to run one pipe outside when you do it that way! Saves on that precious commodity known as PVC.
