Drill or not to drill? Replacing Vent-Rite #35 with Gorton #1

Replacing completely gunked up Vent-Rite #35 (any way to clean those?) with Gorton #1. Issue is VR is a 1/2" and Gorton is 3/8". Pipe is 2". Do I try to drill it out and try to tap the new thread for 3/8", or am I fine with doing 1/2" to 3/8" adapter (nipple plus reducer F/F) for the #1s CFMs needed at 3PSI max? I am running the system at 1.5PSI, per Dan's book tuning tips.

Gorton #1 as a half inch female thread and a three-quarter inch male thread.Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.
