I have a steam boiler im replacing there is no return main. The feed comes off the top and runs to the radiators there is a t that drops off the feed to the boiler drain and the cold water ties in with it there is no hartford loop. They have replaced one boiler and piped it this sam

Counter flow
Your description is a little fuzzy, but it sounds like a counter flow system.
As Zman suggested, post this with some pics on the steam section.Bob Boan
