- 45 F outside and she decided to turn one of the two zones down before retiring last night:) my thought is, turn the t stat to where you feel comfortable and leave it alone...:) disregard anything it might be saying :))

New Thermostat (Rite Temp) - Stays on Too long ?
All,
I have a house built in the 1930's with a one pipe steam, with a milli volt on the boiler. I recently replaced the thermostat with a digital programmable (http://www.ritetemp-thermostats.com/8022C.html) thermostat.
The system now fires up, taking about a 30-40 minutes for all the radiators to fully heat. Once the system was fully charged, I thought the boiler was supposed to go off ?
Now when the system is fully charged, the boiler cycles on and off until the Thermostat is satisfied. Is that normal ?
It seems very wasteful. Sorta defeats the purpose of dropping my heat at night and bringing it back up in the morning.
Do I need to get another thermostat ? Recommendations ?
Thanks,
Rich

I have this same t-stat
And it works just fine... I have it set for:
7:30AM = 63 degrees
9:00AM = 60 degrees
5:00PM = 63 degrees
10:00PM = 56 degrees
When the boiler comes on warm, it takes about 8 minutes to get heat in the first couple of sections and about 20 minutes to warm the all sections. Usually runs about 25-30 minutes to satisfy the t-stat. Shuts off as soon as it hits the desired temp and doesn't cycle back on until the temp drops below desired temp.
Sounds like either a defective t-stat OR something with your boiler. Is it building pressure and then releasing between cycles?

Adjustable Anticipation
I am having the boiler cleaned today, hopefully that will fix the short cycling when the system is fully charged. If not I am going to try to get some more info, but it looks like I might have to buy a new t-stat with "adjustable anticipation".
From what I understand of the concept, the system runs, than is forced off after a period of time. Which is what used to happend with the old t-stat.
I am going to open a tech support e-mail with Rite Temp to see what they say.
63, 56 degrees. Yikes, that is cold. Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Rich
