Water hammer

in THE MAIN WALL
to have a water hammer( 1 bang) at start(cold) up and then be quiet for the rest of the cycle? I have an in stall that the customer is conserned...It did it before and after the new unit went in....kpc

    Check the pitch of the piping,you may have a low spot causing a small amount of condensate to pool and go bang on start-up.

    I agree

    with water being hung up in a main pipe . Another reason would be no insulation on the pipes - once they heat up , no more banging . We had a problem job , a Burnham commercial steamer . Nothing but nightmares till the owner finally insulated all the pipes . It solved ALL the problems - banging , low water/boiler overfilling , and short cycling - all stopped happening .     Hi Kevin

    Missing insulation can do that, too.

    Water in a radiator...where is it that it bangs?

    Is it a snap, like water and steam collapsing together, or a bang, like water hitting a bend?
