New steam boiler - day 1
On Jericho TPKE in Mad Dog's home town . It's not fun feeding the meters every hour on an install . It's even less fun when the boss wants the job done in one day , and you have only 2 helpers - one's a rookie , the stairs are steep , the basement is pack rat city and it's raining like the end of the world . Needless to say , we have to go back tomorrow . Thats Kenny looking at wires , I think . I hope .

How far we got
We disconnected the boiler and moved it to the side for another company to remove . We installed a Peerless ECT 5 and are reusing the Riello burner . And I do love those drop headers - the last nipple wasn't the right size , so the extra swing made it line up no problem .0 -
nice header
can't wait to see more pictures.0 -
Funny
Seeing that nice new Riello on that rusted hulk. I don't think that Ferrari burner was going to help the Titanic's engine room. LOL.0 -
SNAPPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The drink of true wetheads!(At work anyway!)
Nice looking job Ron!
I get to go look at one of those Levitt style homes this Friday. Wait until they see what I propose!

Gonna have the completed pics
tomorrow . I wanted to get a frontal shot , but theres too much crap in the way . Thanks Gerry .0 -
My co workers
Phil and Sal installed the water heater a few months ago , and as a bonus they threw a Riello in the old boiler . Sorta like putting a new heart in a cadaver .0 -
So , whats the true drink
for wetheads after hours ? Thanks Mark , this was one of those days where the header went together smoothly - all the 2 inch lined up perfectly .
So whats the game plan in the Levitt ? Theres a limit to how many zones you can hook into a boiler under the stairs , or hanging off the floor . What the limit is , I'm not sure , but I bet you're gonna push it a little .0 -
Yep
I'm gonna give him a choice - done fast or done right , and option 1 aint an option . Actually we got more done than I thought we would with all the hassles . Thank you Clammy .0 -
Why do you increase...
to 3"? Could you keep it at 2" and get the same effect? kpc0 -
snapple vs. budweiser
back in the old days those would definetly have been beer cans. lol0 -
2\" to 3\"

Ron youda man buddy
Ron keep up the good work your making us all look good.0 -
Yes , it slows the velocity
of the steam coming out of the boiler , and Peerless requires that size for this boiler . I think it worked - not a bang or a ping after I cleaned the system out .0 -
That piping comes from
the 88 Weil Mclain steam boiler manual . I think it's easier to install that way and you don't get the pigtail sway if you use mercury pressuretrols . I also like the full 3/4 size so nothing gets clogged up . Dave , the floor was pretty level , but with a 5 section ECT , it makes its own level . Thank you Dave and Scott .0 -
Next time
I will paint the copper returns black , maybe even stencil in some white at the ells to look like Teflon . Hey wait , after the time it takes to paint and stecil , I coulda done it all in black . Thanks Scott .0 -
I sure am trying
I had to go back today to finish . Didn't get a helping hand till 2 pm . Thanks Dave0 -
Finished job
I know Scotty - copper returns . If you have a good photo software program , can you change them to black for me ?
I had to go out the front with the skim once again because it was impossible to pull out the factory installed 1 1/2 inch flat plug in the back . After 2 cut knuckles I give up on crap like that . Peerless is also going cheap with the draw rods and send these boilers with the thinner , WBV size rods . When we pulled the boiler back together I thought the rods were gonna snap . They also sent the wrong steam trim - the gauge glass and the brass rods were too short . We also had to use a 24 volt manual reset LWCO , and of course it did not work , sensing low water when it was plenty full .
Other than all that , the boiler steamed up real good . After purging the returns of crap and skimming the boiler , I stuck around a good 45 minutes to clean up and not a bang in the place .0 -
And
it's easier to clean out than the usual pigtail. Once again- beautiful job.

nice
nice looking job Ron. How many man hours did you have into it???0 -
With the new kid
it was 32 man hours . Not the best job for the rookie to learn to Teflon pipes . We also had a separate company remove the old boiler , but we had to disconnect it and move it aside . The other crew probably saved us 2 hours . Thank you Steve .0 -
Oh , I enjoy it when it's done
Getting there is what I could enjoy a little more . Thanks Tom .0
