I'd leave it.... unless it's the only convector in a house full of cast-iron radiators.

If your convector uses a vent with the threaded shank on the bottom instead of the side, the Hoffman #41/43 or any of the bottom-shank Gorton vents, properly sized, should work OK. If it uses the standard radiator-type vent, any good vent will work OK if it's properly sized.

Maybe the best thing to do would be to take your old vent to a supply house to match it with the proper new one.

Where to buy air vents for steam convectors

The air vent on one of my in-wall steam convectors appears to be leaking steam. Where can I buy a replacement ? I'm in the greater Boston area.

I would get rid of the convector and have a recessed radiator put in. The convector doesn't heat too well. Just have a pro do it. It will cost more, but you'll have heat. Have them use Gorton air vents. Forget about Hoffmans.

Recessed radiators vs. convectors

Hmm, I thought the convectors were getting the job done okay, but I'm a layman.

Are recessed radiators known to do a better job ? Will they fit in the same spaces currently occupied by those convectors ? Who makes the recessed radiators ?
