blance/control valves
does it matter where you put these i have seen them desinged both on the supply and return. Also seen the blance on the return and control valve on the supply. is there a reason or just the engineers prefence ?????0 -
It does not matter. The pressure drop across a hydronic balance valve or a control valve is the same, regardless of whether it is installed upstream or downstream of the terminal device.
Traditionally, most designs show balance and or control valve at the outlet side of terminal equipment. From what I have gleaned after 20 years of wondering why this is traditionally done, it is because the control/balance valve sees cooler fluid temperatures in a heating application... which allows the device to withstand higher system static pressures (important in a few special applications). In a chilled water application, the valves experience warmer fluid temperatures, thus less "sweating".

balance on return
my understanding is that having balancing valves on the return keeps the pressure up in the circuit and this in turn helps keep air in solution.
