Gravity hot water radiator connection

What is this? This is on all the second floor radiators. It was originally a coal fired gravity hot water system.

If I remember correctly this Tee allows the hot water to pass over the cold water as it drops and the hot water to rise into the radiator. Simple and elegant using one tapping and much less pipe.

I would guess that the supply on the right had an extension pipe going into the radiator. That supply would be "telescoped" into the return part of the valve.

The supply flows up from that extension and the return water at the bottom of the rad just flows out and down.

Some type of double flow fitting. The tee probably has a baffle or a partition in it

@Bubbleheadtoo , this is a piece of heating history. I can't make out the name on that special tee, can we get a better pic?
