G404 Series 4BJ3, I'm guessing 1950's - early 1960's, atmospheric gas burners.

Maybe a date on a circ pump, zone valve, or expansion tank could be a clue

60 cycles suggests 50s-60s to me, but the tag overall doesn't look 50s, so I'm betting early - mid 60s.

I highly doubt newer than 1960s, by the 70s I think everyone had switched over to Hertz.

Late 1960s. Earlier ones had a more ornate script on the company name. And in 1969 or so, they sold their boiler and radiator line to Burnham.

Those boilers are built like tanks. How about some more pics?

This is running steam. Homeowners said system has been running great and fuel bills are reasonable. The low water cut off needed work and the contractor broke the brass gage glass fitting in the casting. The system was overfilled, but owner said there was no water coming from the box…only the low water cut off. They had been told boiler was from 1987…I didn't think so. I figured 1950's early 1960's. I had the 3 foot tall American Standard gray/silver sheetmetal atmospheric in my old home that post dated these models, IIRC. This has the brown sheet metal cover. Mine was the one that looked a lot like the Burnham Independence, with two 2 inch supplies on top…also built like a tank. I always got really nice combustion numbers on the gray covered model…20 to 30% excess air, with analyzer efficency around 78%. Those older cast iron burner atmospherics always seem to have much better combustion efficiency than the newer steel tube burners that run about 50% excess air.

Technically speaking, aren't all home heating boilers literal tanks?

The manufacturer's address on the nameplate includes a ZIP code. They were introduced in 1963, so the boiler was made sometime afterwards.

Is it one with a Detroit Lubricator modulating valve? Or any Detroit Lubricator branded controls?

American Standard did have great boilers. Too bad they sold to Burnham who probably decided that a good boiler was too expensive to make so they went in another direction.

Actually, Burnham continued at least some of the A-S boilers for a while. My 1983-vintage V-14 was originally an A-S model and is still going strong.
