Possible to remove sections from new radiator
I might be able to get a brand-new castrads radiator for a good price, but it's a bit wider than I need. Would it be relatively easy to remove a few sections? If it's the reverse of their process to join sections for extra wide radiators, it doesn't seem too complicated.
I'd prefer to not buy their $250 tool kit if possible

You would need to ask the manufacturer whether that particular radiator comes from the factory as a fully assembled unit or if it is supplied as separate sections that are assembled at the job site.
I do not believe there is an easy way to remove a single section from a new radiator once it has been factory assembled. Factory-assembled radiators are put together using section nipples and special assembly tools unlike the nipples you might use for putting two or three piece radiators together. Unless you can obtain those tools, it is very difficult to remove the nipples and separate the sections.
The nipples used for field assembly are designed so the assembly tool can pass through each factory assembled section until it reaches the nipple that needs to be tightened to pull the separate sections together. Factory assemblies may use different nipples and tooling, which makes disassembly more difficult.
Basically, the factory nipples and the assembly nipples are different.

are they push nipple radiators held together with rods or radiators with left-right nipples?

Left right nipples. with a special tool to assemble larger rads that come is two or three pieces. The tool does may not work on the factory installed nipples. That is why I mentioned that you should call the manufacturer or email them.

Hi @orew, we have a single section assembly toolhead which you'll need to remove a section at a time. Depending on which model, we can tell you the correct size you'd need. Most our models use a 1-1/4" left/right nipple. It's the same method, but there is most likely threadlocker on the factory joins which may make taking it apart difficult - if we know which order it came from, we can advise further. You'll almost certainly also need some new gaskets.
Feel free to email me at nick@castrads.com with the details and I'll be able to tell you exactly what you need.
For the record, we fully support repair and reuse of our radiators. They're built just like the old ones and ought to last every bit as long.

It's a mistake to take apart a brand new, factory-assembled radiator over $250.00 bucks. Mad Dog
