HPWH hybrid concept with gas burner

Navian had this prototype stainless tank HPWH with burner in bottom for a dual fuel option. I don't see much info yet, burner size for example.

I remember the solar thermal industry tried a few solar tanks with bottom burners. The control for the burner was in the upper 1/3 of the tank.

Cooler water stratified at bottom to allow better solar cotribution.

I can’t see the benefit. Frankly if you distrust the HP that much, just get a gas one!

For DHW I would "pump heat' during daylight hours using my PV to the max.

In the evening if my wife draws the entire tank to fill the soaking tub, the gas assures I still get a shower, never needing the resistance element to kick in as traditional HPWH do.

For radiant only, I like a tank style heater, built in insulated buffer. . So depending on how the control works, run the heat pump, and gas as needed during PV hours, see how it switches to efficient condensing gas in the evening. If it has enough btu capacity a plate HX could be used. So radiant and DHW from on footprint.
