Stopped by a clients building and saw the new gas meters as well as one of the old. Cant believe how small they are

the last time the replaced my water meter they replaced it with something similar. it is basically a piece of plastic pipe with a display on it.

Yeah, I've seen those in the wild. I've got an Old Guy's distrust of them new-fangled things. We'll see how well they work in 50 years.

I think they are all meant to be swapped and refurbished at much shorter intervals than that. I like when the bearings on the bellows rods get noisy and you can hear them slowly creaking at the rate of gas usage like a block away.

That was the old AT&T HQ building. The original equipment in there would have dated to the 1920s and used a lot of power. It could run on either line voltage or "talk battery" which was 48VDC. Fascinating stuff, especially considering the limited technology of the time- just like our Dead Men.
