venting one pipe residential steam main

Options

hi, the pictures attached shows the mains in my 113 year old house. Just had a new gas boiler installed in June and after reading on this forum I have a couple of questions regarding above that relate to my pictures.

  1. On the pic with what appears as a vent piping that has been plugged up should I un-plug and install a vent?
  2. On the other pic would raising the vent higher than it is now aid in main venting?

Thanks and this question has probably been asked more than once but I'm 'measuring twice and cutting once' before I do anything that can affect the systems performance,

Thanks in advance for all and any advice,

Pete

    Question 1 — yes

    Question 2 — not much

Since the pipe along the wall is pretty short it wouldn't make much difference. I would be inclined to raise the vent that they put in a bit but if it is functioning ok and not spitting any water then it will probably be fine.

Did they size the boiler properly (match sqft of standing radiation to sqft rating of boiler)?

How long and what pipe size is the main? Do you know the main vent is large enough?

Question 1 is actually a pipe that used to feed a radiator, which someone removed who didn't know what they were doing.

And also on Picture one, there appears to be a manual penny air vent installed, or is that a mared and disfigured plug? Pic number one…yes, install a vent.
