Hello all,

My partner and I recently bought a home. The house was built in 1922 and has a steam boiler system that uses two pipe steam radiators. I came across this piece of piping and couldn’t figure out what it was. It is attached to the supply line.

My best guess is that it is some sort of old school expansion valve or air vent. I came across it when I was checking radiator control valves for leaks. When checking the radiator in the living room, I heard loud rushing air. It wasn’t a windy day and the house is brick so it’s fairly insulated from outside sound. I followed the noise to the basement and saw steam coming out of the pictured piping.

My question is three fold:

  1. What is it?
  2. What does it do?
  3. Is venting steam part of its normal operation? IMG_6375.jpeg
