Guidance replacing water heart gas valve

Any tricks for swapping out the electronic gas valve on an AO Smith power vent model? It looks simple enough, just spin the old one out & the new one in, but I've never removed a valve like that.

I'm thinking break the valve loose with the tank full, then drain it. How hard will it be to turn it? If the anodes I've pulled out are any indication it's going to be rough.

Use a nipple in the gas valve as leverage to break loose . I tend to leave the drain hose open and catch it on the fly .

There was an error rendering this rich post.

Came right out, the nipple that sticks into the tank is plastic. I was worried about it for no reason.

The new valve, however, gives an 8-2 flash code: temperature sensor fault detected. 😞

    It's electronic, line voltage powered.

As it turns out, the temp sensor was unplugged (not slipped off, simply no plugged in). I'm not sure how it ended up like that, the body seemed to be new never used.

In any case, as soon as I plugged it in, it started to work.
