Domestic Hot Water Piping

Hello Everyone,

I am working on this building which has a combi steam boiler producing domestic hot water as well as steam for space heating. Now, I came across this domestic piping arrangement shown in the pics below. I am not able to understand the piping arrangement going into the storage tank.

The pipe coming from the boiler connects to the top of the storage tank. Also, there's one more pipe coming off the storage tank connecting to the return side of the domestic hot water pipe. I drawn a pipe layout for better understanding. I have a few questions below:

1. How does this piping arrangement works?

2. Is the flow of water coming in and out of the storage tank correct in the piping layout that I drew?

3. There's a gas line connecting to the storage tank via manifold (can be seen in the pics)

Thank you.

Are there any pumps? (There sort of has to be!). Is the storage tank fired? With gas to it, it would seem it might be? If not, why not?

    There's missing stuff…

I did not see any pumps. Need to confirm with the super. The storage tank is gas -fired (have attached the model no for clarity). Is the storage tank working as a supplemental heat? I am thinking the water is flowing from the storage tank towards the boiler, where both the boiler supply and storage tank supply connects to one of the port of the 3-way mixing valve. I have redrawn the water flow direction. Is this correct?

That "storage tank" is an ordinary plain vanilla gas fired tank type water heater, and if piped more or less as shown is the primary hot water source for the domestic hot water.

    For starters.

Your second drawing just above makes more sense, and that will operate off the water and possibly off the boiler without pumps.

What type of heat exchanger is inside the boiler?
