Different valves?
what is the difference between these two? Why does the old one have a larger body. Do I need to go with a large body like the old style? This is for a hot water boiler system.

The probability that the union half on the new valve will fit with and seal with the union half on the stub from the old valve is somewhere between slim and none.
You will need to remove the stub from the radiator and replace it with the stub which should have come with that new valve.

The old one might have a larger seat. Are they both 3/4" in and out? Probably doesn't matter much on a pumped hot water system, could make a difference on a gravity system.

the old valve could be a globe valve, they have that large rounded shape. They are a more linear action valve. The seat and valve disc may be a tapered design
It is a better valve for regulating flow than a flat disc compression type valve, and still a good shutoff valve

OK… I'll ask the dumb question. What's the matter with the old one, other than it needs a good wire brushing? There isn't much that can go wrong with those things that can't be fixed in an hour or so…

The old one is worth more at the scrap yard
