Burnham boiler constant call for heat

in Gas Heating

Randomly started having an issue a couple weeks ago when I came home and the house was 80°(set at 68°). Trying to figure out why my heat won’t stay at the set temp. And constantly calling for heat. 2 wire system heat only
2 zones,first floor, basement. The basement zone was capped off and baseboard was removed when I bought the house
Everything worked fine, nothing was messed with


Things I’ve tried-
-new thermostat

-new relay box

-new power head
-rang out my wires make sure nothing was shorting

my other thought was the damper being stuck in the open position but haven’t tried to replace it yet

    Does the burner turn off if you turn off power to the boiler? If it does not, turn off the manual gas valve and do not use the boiler until you get a competent tech to fix it,. if the gas valve is stuck open it could burn your house down.

    Quite so, @mattmia2 . But assuming that it does turn off…

    Disconnect the control wire from the boiler control. It should turn off. If it does, find out where those wires go (most likely the zone valves) and disconnect them there. It's quite possible that one of those zone valves isn't closing all the way, or is otherwise misbehaving, and leaving a constant call for heat.

    especially that style of taco valve is prone to that sort of issue.

    Stop with the parts cannon that is only going to cloud the issue.

    You say you only have 1 zone now as the basement zone is capped off but you still have two zone valves and associated wiring. Make sure the old basement thermostat is not running the system.

    The way the wiring works is each thermostat opens its respective zone valve. When the zone valve(s) open the end switch inside each zone valve proves the valve is open and sends a signal to the boiler to start.

    Both end switches are wired in parallel so either one can start the boiler. I would disconnect the basement zone if it is inactive.

    You either have a wiring problem or you could have a zone valve stuck open or it could be something else.

    Make sure your main zone valve is operating from the thermostat and that it also fires the boiler on and off.

    It can take those Taco valves 90 sec to open.

    Following what Ed said:

    Inside the control, which you have photographed, are two thermostat wires………..red and white.

    Shutoff power to the boiler and disconnect these two wires.

    Start the boiler and see if it will run. I doubt it will run.

    This will tell us quite a bit of where to look for the problem without throwing parts at it.
