Beckett AFG burner, R7284 Soft Lockout Issues
I fired up my Burnham boiler this season, and all seemed well. I checked the chamber and water jackets, and everything was clean (doesn't get used a whole lot once the woodstove is going). I noticed one morning the boiler was kicking on and off, going into soft lockout. The cad readings on the digital display seemed erratic, so I changed the eye, and replaced the spin-on filter and nozzle and reset the electrodes. Started out working good, then back into soft lockout. Ohms were still a bit erratic (jumping 800-1600) so I then changed the cad cell socket and wiring. Fired it up, and the ohms were sitting right around 600-700 pretty steady. It ran good for a few days with no issues, and seems to run good when it first fires up from cold, but then goes back to "soft lockout internal error" and will run for a second or two just after igniting and lockout again. Can anybody tell me what route to take as far as diagnosing?

EDIT: I replaced the cad cell eye with the first one I originally bought (bought the first new one, and when I bought the socket and wiring it came with another eye). Now the ohms are reading about 1100 steadily, and boiler is running fine. Why am I having such sporadic issues with these ohms readings? Bad cad eye out of the box?

Much more likely bad contacts or a bad wire or plug and socket.

Everything for the cad cell is new....new wiring, socket, eye, etc.

What are the combustion numbers?
What is the smoke reading?
What are the draft readings?

Uh huh. First, double check all that. But I didn't restrict my comment to the new stuff. Check every single wire, connection plug, socket, what have you. Especially grounds. You had similar problems with the old cad cell and the new one… maybe it's not a problem with the cad cell?

For what it's worth the only time I have seen the R7284U display "internal error" was when it wasn't receiving proper voltage from being used with a generator

I don't have the tools to measure all that, but had a hvac guy at the house back in 2021 and he said it was burning good. Havent changed anything on the setup since then.
I will go through and double check all that, thanks!

I'm surprised nobody ever told you that your oil fired heating system, or ANY heating system for that matter, should be serviced, inspected, and tested by a professional in that particular field. A professional that DOES have the proper tools and instruments to verify their work. This isn't the Saturday morning workshop at the Home Depot. People do this for a living.
It makes sense to get some kind of service agreement. If something goes down on a weekend or holiday, or 2 am on Valentine's Day, someone will be there to get you heat. Companies that deal with oil will almost always have the part in the van if a part is needed. Along with electricity, it's the most important non living thing in your house. Its a need, not a want. Oh, and substance. Ok, it's in the top 3.
