Freon 12 definitely has an odor. Shutting off the town gas was probably to avoid everyone dying of co poisoning in their sleep.

It's also extremely toxic when burned but we never let facts get in the way of good advertising.
Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.

The refrigerant itself has no order, when in a system you're smelling the oil.

It isn't in a system when it was in an air duster(freon 12) can or an electrowash(freon 113) can and it has the same odor.

The same thing could be said of wood or plastic and those are a lot easier to construct conditions where they burn.

R-12 has no odor. Whatever you smell is something else carried by the R-12. It may or may not be flammable I don't know but phosgene gas it a major problem.
