would strapping  a  chunk of magnesium mounted to the hot water outflow pipe do any good as a sacrificial anode??

i've seen some interesting magnesium cathodic reduction systems on boats; they had a common grounding buss that went from a massive chunk of Mg mounted outside the hull, then wired to all metal parts/struts etc. & thought maybe for a water heater?? 😎

Hi, It would look neat, but would do no good at all. It works on boats because they are in water. You can add a second anode to most tank type heaters though. Can you post a photo of the top of the tank and connecting plumbing. With that we can help you figure out the best way forward.

All the boats I've seen the anode was zinc...

A powered anode would be the best option if I were doing one...
