Hello, I was looking at installing a Barnes and Jones Big Mouth vent horizontally.  Has anyone done it this way, and are there any special requirements to installing it, aside from 8-12 inches high?

I wouldn't install it horizontally, I would think the condensate would collect in it

Well I'm kind of dumb. I was thinking of it horizontal with the out-hole pointed to the side, but I think by posting the discussion above, dko is pointing out that it can be oriented with the out-hole facing down so obviously condensate will drain out.

I will say that the Big Mouth is a little steam-leaky and will probably result in even more loss of water in this orientation.

I would stick to the vertical piping in a hortizonal position it will leak some condensate . Even though it is the largest vent and rightfully so I would surely have an extra element and o ring in stock or leave on the job for when it does not close . If you find it leaking I would say switch to a gorton number 2 or a group of number 1 on a manifold . I ve found that they do need to be repaired occasionally but better repair then buying some new vents . I usually install a few elbows and pipe it higher and outta the way and of course w pitch back to the main and in some case a union right by the main it makes life easier in installing and when the time some replacing or repairing .
    Peace and good luck clammy

Well said clammy. Even setting aside any leakage, it’s such a large mass of brass that it needs to condense a lot of steam to heat it up. This adds greatly to its time to close compared to the thin-walled gortons and MoM.

we haven’t seen anyone insulate one yet though!

These vents do not shut is they see water so vertical installations only. I have six on my system.
