old honeywell #2 relief valve is it filled with mercury

one of my plumber friends has an old honeywell #2 relief valve its 3ft tall and looks like theres a spaceship on top i think they are filled with mercury does anyone know if that is true

    Contact your State environmental protection people -- they will be able to guide you to a contractor or site who will be able to handle it. For, I might add, usually a handsome fee.

    If allowed to tip over might spill out mercury....a lot of it.

    Many government agencies have an "amnesty" day every 30-60 days at some collection point.
    Ours will take mercury, lead, small batteries etc.

    You might want to heat seal it in a sturdy plastic bag just in case.

    Here is an example of how you could dispose of it in Union County, New Jersey. Just label it a "mercury switch" which it is but not electrical.
