Diverter stem

The diverter stem is bad. It has a copper pipe sleeve over the stem. I tried using shower valve wrenches and the smallest is not big enough and next size will not fit in the sleeve. What can I do. House was built in the 1940s

    A picture would be great. There are shower valve wrenches available in sizes other than those in common sets.

    Please send some pictures of your shower valve. There are many different types out there. So some pics will be of some help.
