Help! What kind of heat do I have and how do I make it stop??

I live in an apartment building and it is constantly 100 degrees in here during the fall and winter because I have no control of the heat. There’s no thermostat in my apartment. I hate having to open my window because I live right next to a train station and it’s always loud. How do I make it so the heat doesn’t come up or is at least decreased?

  • I also have no ability to turn the knob on any of the radiators in the apartment. I think they are soldered open.

It's two-pipe steam. If the management doesn't care, maybe cover the front of that convector with an insulating blanket.

Opening a window ga small amount is NOT a bad thing. Fresh air is required.

As said cover the top of the coil with a towel, blanket anything WILL reduce the amount of heat emitted!

Is that valve one of those american radiator valves with the screw under the cap that adjusts how much steam it lets in?

If you know a handy man with sheet metal or you are a DIY, a damper control like this is easy and simple to make on your existing radiator. Then this is a permanent fix on that convector.

  • Thank you so much everyone! We wrapped the finned heating element in heavy duty aluminum foil, hopefully that does the trick.
