Cogeneration is an excellent idea that is not used as much as one would suppose. One issue is that electric utility needs baseload so when industry generates its own..... Electricity is complicated.

Decades ago I had a client who used a Diesel engine to drive refrigeration compressor. Must have had a bad experience when standby generator failed at an inconvenient time. Electricity is complicated. So I thought that it was an ideal opportunity for CHP. Recuperate the waste heat from Diesel to power auxiliary refrigeration machines to subcool the refrigerant. Save some Diesel fuel. Project never went forward.

Ships used to recuperate heat. Refineries also. But nowadays I see less new & used heat transfer equipment for sale. Guess energy is not expensive enough?
