Decomissioning Hot water boiler heat exchanger

Icarus Member Posts: 143
Quick question,

My son is having a. Heat pump hot water heater, and is going to not use the hot water exchanger on the oil boiler. Two questions, first does one need to do anything special to decomission the heat exchanger? Second, can he safely shut the boiler down completely for the warm months. As long as it is not cycling is there a problem with it lying cold over the summer?

Thanks, Icarus

You can shut it down in the summer. Occasionally boilers that have been kept hot 24/7 will leak when they are cold but this is not usually the case.

Third -- it should be obvious, but often isn't, don't trap water in the decommissioned heat exchanger. At least one end, if it is a coil type, must be open.

Also- there will no longer be a need to keep the boiler hot all the time. So have the controls rewired so the burner only runs when there is a call for heat.
