On one of the threads a water seal was shown on one pipe steam systems.

Taken from my book. A set up found in Manhattan in a building built in 1910.

    Original thinking is I can' run a wet return in the building may have issues with condensate returning from the radiators because we have no drip leg to a wet return to handle condensate coming down the riser and steam going up the risers,

    These old time engineers that designed the systems actually supervised these heating system installs and when problems developed had to find a solution or they would be out of business.

    My suspicion is that architectural constraints forced design compromises.
