Icarus, I have went over the Sandens pretty well, only problem is there btu ratings. Really would like 2 - 4 or 5 ton units but alas not available, yet.

Hi, HR is right! I was at an expo yesterday in Sacramento CA, showing off new ideas in heat pump water heaters. It was basically standing room only. At present, Colmac, Nyle and A O Smith were the three companies talking about commercially sized heaters. Also, companies are working on 120VAC heat pumps as replacements for gas fired heaters. We'll see where it goes and how fast.

Sanden’s are easily plumbed in series to increase production. I am currently doing a project to use two for CH and DHW using a Taco Xblock.

In good old days a refrigeration guy could build his own. When double wall was coded in that became more difficult. Maybe double wall is not necessary for CO2 refrigerant? Are CO2 compressors available?

co2 compressors are not readily available in lager that 1 ton or so sizes, that is one reason why Sanden stayed at size they are as they are using automotive compressors which some factories are tooled already for.
