Is there any other way to tell if the expansion tank is bad besides knocking on it?

    Much better! Remove the tank and check the precharge pressure using the schreader valve.

    That’s pretty much the only way.

    Same people who knock on expansion tanks must’ve learned it from knocking on oil tanks..

    Can sometimes push on the stem of the schrader valve. If you get air the bladder is most likely intact. If you get water, it's time to change it.
