System 2000 leaking

OK my unit is a bit over 30 years old but I remember they said at the time that it was a lifetime warranty (less labor) So my oil company (cert EK installer ) said that I need to replace the unit @ around $.

So a rep from Energy Kinetics looked at it and said he wasn't interested in repairing it/replacing it as "something" was left off the boiler when it was installed . (I didn't catch what he said the first time and he seemed to not want to repeat that when I asked,..not sure what he could mean.

I have had it serviced with the "gold plan" each year which was supposed to clean it, check out its functions and set any controls and generally check out the unit. So I'm thinking it should be between the oil co installer and Energy Kinetics.I notice that they still talk on their literature about there lifetime warranty. ...from their site: "If you want lower monthly fuel bills, plus a boiler that lasts and is backed by the industry's best lifetime warranty,...call,.....................

Also at their same site,.."System 2000 boilers installed some 40 years ago still operate at or near their original efficiency. How long will they last? The answer is simple : 40 years and still counting!"

Seems to me I should expect the boiler to last longer?

Well, 30 years is pretty darn good for any boiler, most would be happy to get 20 in this day and age. I would try and find out what was "left off" the original install. Was the Energy Kenitics "rep" directly from the factory??

We can't talk price on this forum so please remove the cost

another thought, usually the warranty only cover's the HX. Which means all the controls need to be moved over, the burner and everything else.. at 30 years old I would say you made out dam good and look at a new boiler. And yes, I would stay with Energy Kinetics..

  • When you replace this boiler, make sure the installer sizes the replacement properly, according to the heat loss of the building.

30 years is pretty good. A new EK Frontier is even better. Front service, better Manager, ECM circulator, plenty of hot water. And clean burning. I believe the EK-1 is now coming with the Carlin EZ-1 burner.

I believe it's called a limited lifetime warranty, after that many years there is probably some credit that can be applied to a new boiler if all conditions are met. It's all in the fine print. If your roof shingles don't last the full 30 years you were promised you wouldn't expect a free roof after 25 years. Energy Kinetics does stand behind their products better than most companies.

I’m sure Roger or someone from EK will be here to advise you. They are fantastic with customer service.
Yes limited lifetime warranty, which I’m sure is prorated.
I’d imagine they would do better for you than any other boiler manufacturer, and would probably want the boiler back if it could provide them any insight to make their product better.
All of this is assuming the boiler was installed correctly and there aren’t any water quality issues combined with or without a leak somewhere in the system.
As the others stated, 30 years is a 'win' in my book.

well I might agree with a STANDARD boiler getting 30 years is pretty good (however I have properties that are going longer than that still with fairly good efficiency. One that was there since 1972 and was there when I purchased the place. Should be no water quality issues. Low mineral well water.
I don't see any fine print on the packet that I have hanging up with all the other papers in which it does say lifetime limited warranty, other than saying that its backed by the industries best lifetime warranty.

    Also note:

At their same site,.."System 2000 boilers installed some 40 years ago still operate at or near their original efficiency. How long will they last? The answer is simple : 40 years and still counting!"

OK,..I found the info on warranty on line,(I don't think it was ever given to me) anyway it says after the 25th year and above 75% of the trade list price. I know we are not supposed to talk money but without talking money prices ,.. what in the heck does that mean?

And is not the pressure vessel replaceable? Over the years a number of other components have been replaced,.

Doesn't seem like anyone wants to talk about the missing thing sited in the first conversation now that was said to contribute to its failure,
I suppose they don't want to get into it with the oil company.

AND they say under in the warranty sheet,.under EXCEPTIONS AND EXCLUSIONS: The warranty is subject to the condition that the residential boiler must have been installed and serviced in accordance with Energy Kinetics instructions ,..

and it does not assume any liability of any nature for unsatisfactory performance caused by improper installation.

But the only ones that can install this unit are certified factory trained people.
Sound like a bit of a weasel clause to me.

When the PERSEDENT of a manufacturer posts on this site, that really says something!

I could repost at least a dozen threads on here which a manufacturer SHOULD have done something, but were silent, if they were even bothered by some little installer's quibbles that their product wasted everyone's money and time.

@Rick_41 After visiting your apartment building, your territory manager, Mark, let me know that he has been in touch with your heating professional company who also fully stands behind our products.

They have what I believe is an appropriate resolution, which also involves modifications to correct some site specific deficiencies.

Please reach out to them to review next steps and let me know if I can be of further assistance.

    Yes,..I'm very impressed!
I hope I didn't sound too whiny but it was an expense I wasn't counting on after a number of very high unexpected expenses this year. Generally I have been satisfied and impressed with the oil savings (It replaced GE downdraft boiler that came with the building!) I have convinced 3 other landlords to install EK boilers.
BTW I Met John Marran at the Chatham Fair in NY's Columbia County. I believe he was just starting his company then. I always remember talking to him as he took the time and explained his boiler. Years later it made me choose his company.

30 YEARS also on a system 2000 that was setup with oil and changed to a gas burner in around 1997. Installed in 1993. Just had first real problem repaired, had the ceramic combustion chamber changed out as the original crumbled not bad for 30 years! Just wish EK would have sold me the part to replace myself! I could have saved a grand.

Hi Maddog we would want to make sure the equipment is set up properly and running well after changing something that is critical for proper combustion, like the chamber.  It seems the system is running well after 25 years. Please give me a call 908 328-7154

@Dogma , @JayMcCay is right. Any time a combustion unit is worked on, the burner needs a combustion test and retuning if needed. If the company that replaced the chamber did not do this, call them back and have it done- on their dime.
