Just in case you weren’t sure they were needed. A little photo evidence of a 36 year old boiler without one. I think I found where some of my 7% efficiency went. I’ll bet the bottom of the boiler all looks like this. Some of this could have come off when I cut apart the pipe. But I think most of it was there before.

    Oh it was there before. That's why boilers crack. Fire on one side you have to have water on the other side. Sludge on one side cant carry the heat away fast enough section heats up and cracks

    Looks like this is a dry-base boiler. Sludge on the bottom of this type of boiler is much more problematic than on a wet-base boiler. On a wet-base, the bottom doesn't have any heat on the other side.

    My flue temps were high so it was definitely hurting heat transfer. Fortunately the thing was built like a tank. Bad news is dragging its 900lbs to the corner of the room. Not sure if it can get the
    Sections apart.
