Does this device function as an air vent. The system pressure is currently set at 5 psi. Most of the vents are spitting water. I want to turn the pressure down to approximatly 1/2 psi, change all the steam traps, air vents ,and the f&t traps. The system has been neglected for a number of years. The steam mains are 6 inch and 3 inch. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

    Yes it is a vent, and probably will enable the system to maintain a vacuum as well. There are probably crossover traps from the end of main to the return, which may be inoperative.
    Definitely turn the pressure down to 8 ounces maximum as well. You may need a vaporstat, and a low pressure (0-3 psi gauge, to verify the pressure.—NBC

    Agreed. I'll bet it's stuck closed or only partway open, and that's why someone cranked the pressure. Looks like it was added after the system was first installed, since the pipe it sits on is welded to the main.
