Need help! I would like to turn my old 40 gallon electric water heater into a buffer tank. Is there any diagrams on how to do that? Thanks for the help

Remove the drain valve and put a Tee there for the inlet. Use the hot for the outlet after removing any plastic check or dip tube. Cap the cold.

Whether you pipe it in series or use closely spaced Tees to inject into the supply or return depends upon how the rest of your system is designed and sized.

I wouldn't use an old tank. You're cheaping out on something that's not that expensive and that could effect the rest of the system adversely.
