Would anyone know what this is? Found in boiler room of a school we are renovating.

    Acme thread on that... I wonder what that fitting on the bottom might have matched with? I'll bet the thingy (anyone have a better word) in the middle there fit into some kind of socket -- possibly a socket with a clamp which bolted over it -- and it was used to adjust the opening of something, like a window... or a damper...

    That thread reminds me of post jacks used in a basement for sagging beams. The pitch of thread looks like it could apply a lot of push or pull to something.
    Was there a coal burner in there?
    Maybe something for the CI grates?

    Depending on what the attachment on the lower end is made of, it reminds me of a valve seat dresser like my grandfather used in his shop in the mid 1960's. I repaired many valve seats then with a tool that looks just like this one.

    Whatever it is it is very well constructed so it did not come from the Harbor Freight catalog

    I'm thinking a puller of some kind - the threaded crossbar would sit in a groove on the outside, and the end piece would lock into whatever was being pulled.
